Wordplay w/Just One

Posted by jt215 in Wordplay

Truthfully speaking, the majority of interviews are boring - especially if you really dig the person or artist, because that means you’ve read the same things over and over and over again. And sure, it’s great to read about the artists and entertainers, but sometimes you want to read about the silent crew of the community: the promoters, the security guards, bartenders, web designers, soundman, girlfriends, boyfriends, and of course the fans who can make or break any concert or party. So, with that my friends, I bring you WORDPLAY, a simple and fun feature. Yes, this has been done before somewhere – but we’re doing it here and the questions are more real than those emails you get to ‘get to know your friends’ BS! There is no editing, except bad spelling. WORDPLAY is just a few off the wall interview questions with all types of people that make up the hip-hop community. Sit back, relax, laugh and enjoy, DD

PS. If you know of anyone that you’d like to see featured in a future WORDPLAY or you have any questions that seem quite inappropriate, obnoxious and funny, send them my way: deesha@215hiphop.com.

I really won’t waste most time describing someone you know. Most likely, he told you about this site since he is one of the creators behind 215hiphop.com. Just One is his ’street name’, but I call him Justin. You can see him running around Philly handing out flyers and in venues always with a drink in hand - ALWAYS! And Justin, I’m sorry about #11 – I just honestly wanted to know. xo

Redman Interview

Purchase new album online:“Red Gone Wild” at Amazon.com
Redman Myspace Page

Being placed as a legendary MC and still making hit records that all ages enjoy, is not an easy task in today-?s rap world. Especially being that it-?s been well over 5yrs. since Redman has blessed us with a full length solo album. But despite the odds some may give him, he-?s now back in the scene with the Timberland produced hit “Put It Down” . That-?s on his new album -Red Gone Wild-?, which hits stores tomorrow. I got a chance to sit down with the Funk Doc inside his tour bus at his Album Listening Party at Xandu on Spring Garden St. To discuss the youth of today, touring, movies, and of course the heavy anticipated Hit Squad and Meth & Red album.

Wordplay w/Reef The Lost Cauze
By: Deesha Dyer
…Lost Cauze, Sharif, Reef – whatever you choose to call him, it’s all the same. If you’ve been on the scene over the past 5 years then you are familiar with this name and the man behind it that has earned major respect. Reef is an MC that exceeds the hype surrounding him. He resume includes 3 releases ( The High Life, Invisible Empire, Feast or Famine), countless freestyle battle championships, and dozens of stages blessed from the 215 to Cali to Europe. While that all is quite impressive, Reef is just a down to earth dude who possesses an impressionable talent for writing, performing, having a good time, and most importantly - staying focused. He is currently gearing up to hit the road with Jedi Mind Tricks for a few dates followed by Brother Ali for a few more. You can always check his My Space ( www.myspace.com/reefthelostcauze) for a formal type interview, but it’s here that our homeboy kicks it on some real non-serious shit.

Purchase “After Midnight” at CDbaby.com

If your like me and consider yourself a fan of Philly hip hop, beats, graffiti, and the DJ culture, than the name DJ Sat-One is a name you can’t ignore. Not only because he does it all, but is one of the best to do it in each category. From touring the world w/DJ Jazzy Jeff, having a documented graff history, putting out ’12’s, and making hits with Baby Blak, Bahamadia, OuterSpace, and White Mike, this man is easily exceeding Philly Icon Status, along with his Skratch Makaniks Crew! I got a chance to sit down with Sat-One the day after he returned from a Canada tour at The Grape St. Pub. To talk about art, labels, egos, importance of sound, business, and clubs. Simply put, the culture we all call “hip hop”.

You can catch DJ Sat-One at Beats & Rhymes this Saturday @ The Khyber, and every Thursday-Saturday at the Grape St. Pub in Manayunk.

Jake Lefco Interview

Interview w/Jake Lefco
By: Dom Pinelli

In an era of rap music where artists often employ flamboyant images and exaggerative storytelling for recognition, both underground and mainstream, it’s ironic that one of the industry’s most dynamic new personas is Philadelphia’s own Jake Lefco, one who uses his government name on a CD package, has a blue-collar mentality to his career as an artist, and isn’t ashamed to paint a realistic picture of the average young adult’s weekend festivities.

Viro The Virus
“Jerseys Finest”

“Jersey’s Finest” is Viro’s third solo release, and his overall sixth album. This album easily becomes his best work to date from the production, to the art work, to the lyrics. Viro makes it look so easy in showing you why they call him one of Jerseys Finest! The album features production by Caliph-NOW, STRESS, Eyego/Direct, and Decypher. Also featured on the album are appearances by Reef the Lost Cauze, Slim DSM, Side Effect, and Adam 12.

Philly Car Share Presents:
“Philly Sound Clash”

Just like 215hiphop.com; Philly Car Share is very proud of the sounds they are hearing come out of their home town. So they put together this extravagant event and cd to promote our favorite artists from DJ’s, to hip hop bands, to rock, to Soul. Over a hundred artists uploaded their music to be picked from the public with the 11 most popular making the cd comp cut, while 6 others battles it out at World Cafe Live on Feb. 22nd 2006. Needless to say two groups that represent the hip hop culture came out on top! Philadelphia Slick won the 1st place prize with R&B/Soul Singer Tara Girl coming in at 2nd. Although they are the only two hip hop representatives that made the cd cut, this compilation is filled with some great local rock bands. So if you’re into more than just the hip hop sound, I heavily advise becoming a Philly Car Share member just so you can get a hold of this cd!

Suprilla
“Highlights Of A Lowlife”

Bethlehem, PA’s own; Suprilla takes it back to the times when MC’s didn’t have the option on working with a hundred different producers. They understood the concept of making a good rap album with just two people, all while keeping each song fresh and different. Similar to legendary Gang Starr, Suprilla consists of MC Godilla and DJ/Producer Reign Supreme, who produces every track on the album. Although you wouldn’t guess that just by listening to the CD since each beat sounds nothing like the beat you just heard. Many find that is a rare talent, rather than a flaw. All while keeping to the theme of going through life as a lowlife, which we all know has it’s positives, negatives, ignorance, and intelligence at times, which this album most definitely delivers. Joining the lowlife lifestyle on the album is Allentown’s finest: King Magnetic, Adlib, and Kasper, along with 215’s own Reef The Lost Cauze.
