Wordplay w/Jonene Taddei
By: Deesha Dyer

Jonene Taddei is your local dancer, bartender, and most importantly, photographer. Capturing the emotions, thoughts of music’s finest, Jonene is 1/2 the brains and beauty behind Philly’s first DJ Day, in which she with the help of some people gathered and photographed Philly’s past, present and future DJ’s. Along with Kamau Stanford, Taddei urged the Mayor Nutter to make September 24th DJ Philly Day – which was solidified earlier this year. Taddei just opened up her digital website, which gives you just a tiny glimpse into her world. Below, you’ll see another view.

Interview w/ Reef The Lost Cauze
By: Justin Rizzio

If you live in Philly, and listen to hip hop, most likely you’ve heard of Reef the Lost Cauze. If you don’t live in Philly, and listen to hip hop, and never heard of him…well, you’re not doing your job as a hip hop fan then. Reef is an mc that should not need an introduction. But, unfortunately for some people, he might. For those unfamiliar, here’s just a sample of the resume. In 2004, Reef was the EOW Challenge Champion at the Rock Steady Crew 27th anniversary. In 2005, he went on to become the EOW Grand Champion as well. This, on top of an impressive early catalog, led him to become a member of the highly acclaimed Army of the Pharaohs collective. He has worked with artists such as Sean Price, Skyzoo, Terminology, and Planet Asia, among many others. Should I continue? I think you get the point. So read this interview and then do yourself a favor and pick up Reef’s latest offering, A Vicious Cycle (if you didn’t download it already, you cheap bastard.)

Interview w/Hustle Simmons (Dave Ghetto & Tha S Ence)
By: Justin Rizzio

Dave Ghetto might not be one of the most well known names, but he is by no means a newcomer to making records.  Dave is a decade deep in the game and recently teamed up with Philadelphia producer, Tha S Ence, to form Hustle Simmons. In this interview, the word quality appears several times.  That’s just what it is; a quality record. For all those reformed “backpackers” always complaining that hip hop is no good anymore, do yourself a favor, check out Hustle Simmons. Tha S Ence provides Dave with a classic style of boom bap backdrops that are complimented by Dave’s lyrics and wordplay.  Together, it makes you realize why you even listen to hip hop in the first place. So, when you start hearing the name Hustle Simmons coming out of everyone’s mouth (and you will), don’t worry, I won’t say I told you so. Actually, I probably will.

Interview w/ DJ Illegal of Snowgoons
By: Justin Rizzio

Germany is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark, and the Baltic Sea; to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic; to the south by Austria and Switzerland; and to the west by France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and the Netherlands. The territory of Germany covers 357,021 km and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With over 82 million inhabitants, it has the largest population of any member state of the European Union and is home to the third-largest number of international migrants worldwide. Oh yeah, it’s also home to the Snowgoons, a production team that has released two solid albums featuring some of the most talented MCs in independent hip hop.

Wordplay w/Goldie Jawn
By: Deesha Dyer

I remember the first time I met Goldie aka Z – it was at a Koresh dance class some years ago. Little did I know she’d be the same chic I’d run in weekly at hip-hop shows and dance parties. Little did I also know that she would start a musical career. After you read the below Wordplay, slide over to her music page to check out her rhyme style – myspace.com/goldiejawn

Interview w/Aesop Rock
By: Justin Rizzio

Some people love him. Some people hate him. Some people just don’t know what the fuck he’s talking about. However you may feel about Aesop Rock, you can’t deny the fact that this NY MC sells records and packs venues. In an industry that has become over-saturated with sub-par talent, Aesop manages to come out on top with every release for about a decade now. In preparation for his current tour and upcoming Philly show, I asked Aesop a few questions, and well, here they are.

Dilated Peoples Interview

Interview w/Dilated Peoples
By: Justin Rizzio

Since the mid nineties Dilated Peoples have gone from major label to independent to major label again and now back to independent. Over the years they have worked with almost unheard artists and ones of superstar status. They even replaced their DJ shortly after they got together. But, through all the changes they’ve gone through, one thing has always remained; since 1995 Dilated have continued to put out an extensive catalog of solid material. It’s hard to believe that while many groups can’t last more than a few singles, Dilated has managed to stay together and put out records for almost 15 years now. Though they’ve never fully broke into the mainstream, Dilated, instead, has done something even more amazing. They have managed to earn the respect of both the industry as well as fans worldwide. Interview w/ Caen Project
By: Justin Rizzio

Go to enough hip hop events and you’re guaranteed to come home with a pocket full of fliers not to mention the occasional CD. When a CD does get handed to you, most likely you give it a quick listen and then throw it in some drawer of your house never to be seen again. But then there is that rare instance; that one time out of 20 (being generous with 20) that you really like what was handed to you. With that I introduce you to Philadelphia’s own CAEN Project, made up of MC Equinox and producer Cimer Amor. On their recent release, Caesar’s Vengeance, Cimer manages to provide the perfect backdrop to compliment Equinox as he supplies us with both aggressive street narratives and his own introspective struggles. So take the time to learn more about Cimer Amor, Equinox, and the CAEN Project.

illvibe Collective Interview

Interview w/ Illvibe Collective (Lil’ Dave, Statik, Phillee Blunt, Panek, Skipmode)
By: Justin Weleski

I started to get tired of the old neighborhood bar/house party scene back in ‘99-2000. So, I took my fake ID down into the city where I took a crash course to what the Philly hip hop scene was all about. Going to events like Footworks, The Remedy, Tasty Treats (and working with Okayplayer.com) I discovered a whole world of music that I loved and took in like a long lost brother. Then one night a New York DJ/friend was visiting and took me to a party called The Body Rock. It was at a very discreet location where you would drive by it a million times and still not know what door to walk in (because we did exactly that.) When you did though…it had good times written all over it. The music, the crowd, the art on the walls; there was every little element that makes a good vibe happen. While discovering this I also discovered what many people have called the glue that keeps this scene together in Philly. They have the “do it yourself” DJ/promoter mentality. They cover everything from mixtapes, to recorded music, DJ’ing for MC’s, album/flyer designs, radio shows, and production. You name it and illvibe collective is the name that so many artists and fans have relied on to this very day to give them what they want and so desperately need – Quality work coming from quality people! Sit back and learn some things from the people who taught me and many others in this city much of what we know.

Check illvibe collective every 2nd Thursday @ The Barbary for ill! makaniks and every Last Friday for the Body Rock @ The M Room. And visit the official illvibe website at: illvibe.net

El-P Interview

Interview w/El-P
By: Justin Rizzio

Ever wear a sock with a hole in it and think that no one will ever see it, only to find yourself in a situation where everyone does? “Take your shoes off please,” was the first thing El-P’s tour manager said as I stepped onto the tour bus. EL was not there yet so I had a seat and waited. I didn’t mind though, because right in front of me was a laptop playing instrumentals from Dizzee Rascal’s new Def Jux released album Math’s + English.  Next to the laptop was Dizzee, practicing his set which was only about 2 hours away. He greeted me in his thick, slang heavy, cockney accent. After asking “what?” several times, I just nodded and smiled, pretending to understand what he had just said. I was actually more concerned with the hole in my sock, thinking to myself before I left the house; “who cares? when tonight will I be in a situation where my shoes would have to be removed?”

I made a mental note to go home later that night and throw away all socks with holes. I still never got around to doing that. After all, when will I be in a situation where my shoes would have to be removed? Here’s an interview I did with EL-P.

Interview w/ Maylay Sparks
By: Justin Weleski

Back in the late 90’s there was this revolution of underground hip hop that was creating a huge buzz throughout the world. Philly just happened to be one of the biggest landmarks and homes for what many now call “indie hip hop.” Most of the names from Philly came out of this lil’ record shop off Market Street called Footwork. This is where artists such as Jedi Mind Tricks, Last Emperor, OuterSpace, Nuthouse, Chief Kamachi, and of course Rasheed & Ill Advised would go to network and master their craft. Rasheed, better known now as Maylay Sparks, released several 12-inch records, made features on major label albums and was featured on numerous legendary shows from New York for Bobbito and Stretch Armstrong to Cali on the Wake Up Show. Maylay Sparks now lives over in Copenhagen (Denmark) but is still reppin the 215 to the fullest with his new album… and he’s still giving you that same Philly attitude he crafted at Footwork.

Buckshot Interview

Interview w/ Buckshot (Black Moon & Boot Camp Click)
By: Justin Rizzio

During the mid-nineties, hip hop was filled with names like Gangstarr, Wu-Tang, Biggie, and of course, Black Moon and Boot Camp Clik (BCC). Now, years later, some of these artists have parted ways, moved on, and even passed, pretty much removing any chances of being household names in today’s hip hop climate. But some artists on the other hand, suffered some of the most trying times and still never gave up the struggle to keep their place in the spotlight. One of these artists, in particular, is Buckshot. Just when it seemed like all hope was lost for the BCC, Buckshot revamped his Duckdown imprint and delivered us some of the best hip hop records put out in the past decade. During his recent tour promoting his newest album, I sat down with the BDI Thug himself to find out what exactly is in “The Formula.”

Interview w/ Bahamadia
By: Justin Weleski

There are few Philly MCs that are as legendary as Bahamadia. She’s worked with icons such as DJ Premier, The Roots, King Britt, J Dilla and more. Bahamadia was a major part of our golden era of hip hop while laying down the foundation for the post 2000 soul movement. She has never lost a step and continues to stay in peoples ears and eyes by touring the world and releasing music. I finally got a chance to speak to one of my all time favorite MC’s about the struggle of being a business woman & artist, about cheap promoters, hanging out with James Brown, and about the changes she sees seen being involved in the Philly hip hop community for over 15yrs.

Nocturnal Interview

Interview w/ Mark Brandstetter & Brax (of Nocturnal Skateshop)
By: Justin Rizzio

One of the many new trends in hip hop is to dress like a skateboarder. It’s tighter pants, obscure rock t-shirts & skate sneakers. Commercial hip hop has been adopting what they “perceive” as the “skater look.” So, am I doing this interview to keep up with current trends? Fuck no. I did this because I know that skating and hip hop have been influencing each other for over 20 years. (Did you know that Nocturnal was the 3rd store worldwide to have a Nike SB account?) And also because Nocturnal has been a driving force in Philly skating for nearly a decade now. So, if you still might be wondering why a skateshop would be featured on this website, just read the interview. It will all make sense. – nocturnalskateshop.com

Interview w/Emynd & Bo Bliz (White Tee’s, White Belts & The Bounce)
By: Justin Weleski

In a city that is always looked upon as the shadow of New York the one thing we got up on them, as well as the rest of the planet is our DJ’s and parties. From the classic times of The Remedy, Back to Basics, and Hollertronix. To the current times of Tasty Treats, Making Time, Body Rock, and Turbostation. Our DJ’s know how to make you party like no other. So I finally got the chance to sit down with two of the three men who put an up to no good smile on your face every time you notice it’s a new month. And even though they are on a lil hiatus from giving us our first Friday fix of the White Tee’s and White Belts Party. The DJ duo of Emynd and Bo Bliz are still busy and working hard at making you have fun. But want to set the record straight to a large majority of people still think it’s a “hipster party” or think that you have to where a white tee to get in….AND tell you to stop calling them White Tee’s and White Belts, just because they DJ your favorite party!

Interview w/Slug of Atmosphere
By: Justin Weleski & Justin Rizzio

Whether you love them or hate them, there is no denying that Atmosphere has become a driving force in the post-90’s wave of independent music. While staying true to their Midwest roots Atmosphere manages to gain more fans from all over the globe each year. Now, with a new album and a slightly different sound, Atmosphere is out to show fans the many dimensions hip hop can evolve to. Recently, while backstage at a packed show at Philly’s Trocadero, we caught up with Atmosphere’s front man, Slug, for a very impromptu interview. Not bad for an on the spot interview. Interview w/Nelz Gomez of The Gomez Brothers (G Unit/Shade 45 (Sirius Radio)
By: Justin Weleski

When setting up the DJ Cosmic Kev interview I got the heads up that we were going to be hanging out with Kev and a bunch of his friends. One just happened to be Nelz Gomez from the hit Sirius radio show, The Gomez Brothers. In addition to that I also got the heads up that Nelz was a vital part in helping 50 Cent take over the mixtape market since the beginning. He puts in a lot of work over at G Unit Records. So hanging out with the crew I learned more about the man behind the scenes and talked about what goes on in both his worlds and what the future has in store for both radio and record label marketing.

By: Justin Weleski

While growing up in Philly, listening to hip hop (way before the internet) we had very few outlets to hear what we wanted to hear. It was either requesting a music video on The Box or tuning on Power 99 on a late Friday night or if lucky enough coming across a DJ Cosmic Kev mixtape. On a website titled 215hiphop.com it’s only right that we finally got a rare opportunity to sit down with an innovator of both urban radio and the 215s hip hop DJ culture…DJ Cosmic “Strictly Skills” Kev. So in what may very well be his very first online interview we went all the way back to his days at WKDU through how, in 2008, he is still very much as relevant to the radio as he was when he first came onto it. So enjoy the read of not only the history of Cosmic Kev…but the history of urban radio, mixtapes and to the city known as “the home of the DJ.”

By: Justin Rizzio

Del Tha Funky Homosapien; this man really needs no intro. But, for those living in seclusion their whole lives, here we go…as a founding member of Hieroglyphics, Del has been putting out records for almost 20 years. (Yes, 20.) Del has long secured a spot as a permanent staple in the underground hip hop community. He also enjoyed some commercial success with his first album because of the hit single “Mr. Dobalina” and also as a collaborator with the platinum selling group, The Gorillaz. Now, eight years after the release of his last full length, Del finally gives his fans the new record they have been more than patiently waiting for. Interview w/AZ
By: Justin Rizzio

When I hear the name AZ, the first thing I think of is his verse on Illmatic. That was 1994. Well, it’s 2008 and the man with one of the most memorable verses in hip hop is still hard at work. With one gold, and two platinum albums under his belt, AZ has enjoyed both underground and mainstream success. In an industry that has turned its focus on “the next hot commodity,” AZ refuses to abandon his lyrical talent, which has garnered him critical acclaim worldwide for the past 14 years. While in Philly doing some press for his new album, Undeniable, we managed to get a quick Q & A with the man. While he may be short on words for an interview, trust me, you can never say that about his records.

Interview w/J.Period
By: Justin Rizzio

J.Period, a mixtape DJ, what could you possibly want to read about a mixtape DJ? In most cases, that would be a very appropriate question. Not this time though. J.Period is not your average mixtape DJ and he doesn’t put out your average mixtape. You won’t hear his name shouted on every track. No sound effects either. Instead, J.Period brings you cohesive collections of new, classic and remixed material that does more than compliment each artist he works with. From being requested by major labels to work with their most established artists to landing spots on movie trailers; J.Period relies on much more than mixtape hype to push his career to the next level. Now Philly can get a chance to see what I’m talking about on April 5th at Fluid when J.Period will be sure to put any doubts to rest. Until then, here’s a little something about the man to get you started…

We’ve interviewed rappers, producers, DJ’s, & promoters. Now it’s time to switch directions towards something a little different. A major part of hip hop culture has always been the gear that goes with it. From Starter jackets to Timberland boots, countless fashion trends have been started by hip hop. Why am I telling you this? Well, it all leads up to our following interview. With who? No, with what? A store. Not just any store, a clothing boutique that prides itself on being on the forefront of today’s cutting edge of fashion. And more importantly, it’s in Philly! So, we talked to Drew, the store’s owner to put us down on how to stay dipped. I won’t say names, but a few of ya’ll out there need to pay attention to this one…

Ever meet someone who makes no sense and the most sense all in the same sentence? Well, meet C-Rayz Walz. Walz is a veteran battle MC who has been making his presence in hip hop known since the late 90’s. He started out with his crew, Stronghold, then moved on and more recently has been dropping albums on labels like Def Jux and Babygrande. (Fun fact: C-Rayz went to high school with Mobb Deep ). In 2005, Rayz also appeared on MTV’s Made, helping a young white kid how to live his dream of being a battle rapper. Interview w/Poesh Wonder
By: Justin Weleski

Coming up in one of the most dangerous cities in the country ain’t easy. And it doesn’t help when you also live across the river from yet another of the nation’s top dangerous cities. But instead of rhyming about the past and overused topics of violence; Poesh takes a much more mature approach and gives us his life experience as he sees it in the present. Everything from the women to the culture, Poesh delivers it all…top notch. We got a chance to catch up with him after his album release party that happened at The Zodiac (which goes down every 3rd Friday of the month at Medusa Lounge.)

King Magnetic Interview

Interview w/King Magnetic (ODD/Army Of The Pharoahs)
By: Justin Weleski

Back around the 2002/Lattaza era you cold run into a show and see a bunch of rowdy guys on stage beating the shit out of each other and, sometimes, even the crowd. But in the midst of all the ruckus there were some serious beats and rhymes being displayed on a daily basis at shows all across the state. Then things died down, not only with the crew, but pretty much with the scene in general. Then a good friend (Reef The Lost Cauze) decided to put the fire under Magnetic’s ass and got a verse and an instrumental on an album in ’05 that ended up on ESPN’s Monday Night Football reaching hoods from LA to China. Ever since then things have been bubbling for King Magnetic non-stop. Making music with the likes of Sean Price, Stoupe (JMT) Chino XL, Snowgoons and now a new member of Army Of The Pharoahs; King Magnetic isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Word of warning, if you get in his way he may just punch you in the face and leave you with a copy of his newest CD on your forehead.

Interview w/Jawnzap7 (of BurnDown All Stars)
by: Justin Weleski

Stepping out of his eleven man group Jawnzap7, of Burn Down All Stars, goes at it completely solo from the beats and lyrics to the distribution. This album really presents the MC to the fans and doubters that there isn’t any weak links in a group that many feel should be trimmed down; only working with a small hand of producers and just two songs that feature outside MC’s, he holds it down completely solo. So we finally got a chance to catch up with Zap to talk about it all from the TV cameras to the doubters.

Interview w/Freeway
By: Justin Weleski

When your first nationally released song just happens to be on a Jay-Z album, you got a successful career on the horizon. But nothing is handed to you even when you’re on a legend’s album; and Freeway’s journey shows just that. A struggle between faith and rap, his bosses splitting ways, an almost break up of his State Property crew, producers not calling him back, and even paper work getting fu*ked up…this has been the road of Freeway from his first album over five years ago until now. So we got a chance to sit down with one of today’s biggest 215 Hip Hop stars and talked about it all. And be sure to check out the man LIVE – Friday, Jan. 4th for WTWB @ The Arts Garage

HMD Interview

Interview w/HMD
By: Justin Rizzio

HMD. I don’t know what it stands for. I probably should’ve asked him that, because now I’m wondering myself. What I do know, though, is that this San Francisco (via Philly) resident got beats! And as of recently, has made a nice album featuring some of today’s most talented artists. Over the years, HMD’s music has accommodated such local artists as Mr. Eon, Baby Blak, Reef the Lost Cauze, Adam 12, & Catastrafiks. His new album, One Pursuit, includes some of these familiar names along with a list of other high profile MCs. Although this is a producer’s record, HMD does not rely on rappers alone to compliment his well crafted tracks. With instrumentals and DJ tracks in the mix as well, One Pursuit comes off as a well rounded album which will be sure to gain fans from all hip hop genres. After listening to this album, the only thing I regret is not asking what the hell HMD stands for. Oh well.

By: Justin Rizzio

A live hip hop band? A live hip hop band from Philly? Is it…nah, it’s not them. Instead, I introduce you to one of Philadelphia’s up and coming talents. Philadelphia Slick (Philly Slick for the cool kids). This 8 piece band, along with 2 mc’s, turn a live show into exactly that. A live show. Wordplay w/Digs Darklighter
By: Deesha Dyer

I remember interviewing Digs Darklighter about 5 years ago and thinking how strange he was. Not much has changed in that regards, except now my opinion can be loosely based on fact. However, a lot has changed in his life including being a father all day, every day. He was recently interviewed on HERE talking about everything from his history in the local music and graffiti scene, Star Wars, the origin of his name, and details surrounding his solo debut, BoomboxCutter – which is now available. You can read that interview for an brief blueprint to Digs, then check the WORDPLAY below to see the humor that helped him survive some crazed times in the 215.

Interview w/DJ Touch Tone (100.3 THE BEAT)
By: Justin Weleski

When an average person comes across someone with a disability, they often feel bad for that person or pity. But when in fact all disabilities are; is that it disables you not to use or function one thing! And allot of times that person can do and use everything else, a hell of allot better than you can. And it proves to be just that in the situation of DJ Touch Tone, who is the world’s number one and only blind DJ. Born blind, Touch Tone at a very early age was not only able to picture what he thought two turntables and a mixer looked like. He was able to master it to perfection! Even in today’s world of technical mixing, serato, scratchin, and beat juggling; DJ Touch Tone is better than the majority of DJ’s you know, or even heard of. And is continuing to strengthen his career each and every year.

With his new album, The Offering, Killah Priest is back to claim his place in hip hop that he feels he deserves. Like many others, Priest has followed the current trend of artists going independent. Interview w/Dev Rocka
By: Justin Rizzio

You might know him as Kevin Devine. Or, you might know him as Dev Rocka. Either way, he’s been laying down tracks for Philly’s finest for more than a minute now. He’s worked with artists like Reef the Lost Cauze, Planet Asia, Maylay Sparks, and Killah Priest. Now he’s ready to present The Night Shift, filled with top notch guest spots to compliment some top notch production. The Night Shift is like a breath of fresh air…actually, it’s not. Interview w/Digs Darklighter
By: Justin Rizzio

You’ve heard the story a million times. It goes like this – Local rapper makes a name for himself. Rapper puts out records and gets some good reviews in some nationally distributed publications. Rapper gets down with some other well know artists in his circle. Rapper’s music and visibility in the scene is increasing and on the rise. Rapper stops putting out records and his buzz dies away. Heard it all before, right? Well, this one has a different ending. The rapper in question is Philly’s Digs Darlighter. But, instead of falling into hip hop obscurity, Digs has been on his grind and is now ready to release his debut album, BoomBoxCutter. And the buzz is far from dead. Years in the making, BoomBoxCutter is yet another example of the talent Philadelphia can produce. Now, on the verge of his record’s release, Digs is ready to step back in the spotlight and pick up right where he left off. BoomBoxCutter Album Release Party is on Friday, October 19th 2007 at secret location; email digs@illatropolis.com for more info. To purchase album visit illatropolis.com

Interview w/Camp Lo
By: Justin Rizzio

This is it, what! “Oh shit, that’s that Camp Lo song, right? I remember that. That was a hot record. What happened to them”? Well, bad paperwork is what happened. Since the release of the cult classic, Uptown Saturday Night, Camp Lo has been tied up and stuck behind label politics. Remember rule #4080? Finally, in 2007, Camp Lo feels like they are ready for the world again. But is the world ready for them? It’s been 10 years since the duo of Suede and Cheeba were on the charts, but that doesn’t seem to matter much to them. Backed by their original blaxploitation themes and slanged out lyrics, Camp Lo is back on the scene. Black Hollywood style. This is it, what!

If you live in Philly and have never heard of SubHoodz, you might want to check the history. Not only have they been around for the past 16 years, they also cover a wide spectrum from hip hop to punk rock to hardcore. Having such a diverse sound has landed them on the same stages with everyone from Bad Brains to the Pharcyde. Backed by both top notch production and a live band, SubHoodz have been breaking down the musical barriers that many of today’s bands take credit for. Recently, the Hoodz released “No Regrets”. It’s a mix of some new, but mostly older, material. Something for the original fans that stuck with them, but more importantly, for the new ones that might not be familiar. So, if this is your first encounter, I introduce you to Havok and Stress of the legendary SubHoodz.

Most recently, he is wrapping up his tour along with Philly’s own Reef the Lost Cauze and headliners, Jedi Mind Tricks. Interview w/Mr. Eon (of High & Mighty)
by: Justin Rizzio

During the mid to late 90’s, when independent hip hop started to ‘blow up” in NYC, The High and Mighty were on the forefront of the “underground” movement. They stood for true hip hop culture and, most importantly, they represented the city of Philadelphia. The High and Mighty, a duo made up of Mr. Eon and DJ Mighty Mi, have released numerous albums and 12″s along with multiple releases put out by their own label, Eastern Conference Records. Recently, a chance encounter gave me the opportunity to talk with Mr. Eon and to find out more about hip hop’s 12th man.

Interview w/Necro
by: Justin Rizzio

Necro performing LIVE this Thursday at The Troc along with Freddy Madball & Stress(Sub Hoodz), & DJ Starscream (Slipknot)
Click here for more details on show

Death, sex, and hip hop. These are just a few things that embody the artist known as Necro. In the early to late nineties, this upcoming rapper/producer was a favorite on New York’s “Stretch and Bobbito Show”. His topics ranged from everyday street life in Brooklyn to porn and gay bashing. Over the years, Necro has made a name for himself rhyming, producing, and running his own Psycho Logical Records. He is a legend in the underground whose rep just gets stronger. We caught up with Necro right before his tour made its stop in Philly. Here’s what the originator of “death rap” had to say. (And since this interview was done via email, I decided that it was only fitting to leave his answers raw and unedited. Like the man himself. )

But despite the odds some may give him, he-?s now back in the scene with the Timberland produced hit “Put It Down” . That-?s on his new album -Red Gone Wild-?, which hits stores tomorrow. By: Dom Pinelli

In an era of rap music where artists often employ flamboyant images and exaggerative storytelling for recognition, both underground and mainstream, it’s ironic that one of the industry’s most dynamic new personas is Philadelphia’s own Jake Lefco, one who uses his government name on a CD package, has a blue-collar mentality to his career as an artist, and isn’t ashamed to paint a realistic picture of the average young adult’s weekend festivities.

Interview w/ DJ Too Tuff (Tuff Crew)
By DJ PhilleBlunt (ill!)

We all find ourselves doing the air scratch when we hear classic Run DMC tracks like Peter Piper or Jam-Master Jay. Everyone from New York City to Bangladesh knows the unforgettable scratch hooks from Dwyck by DJ Premier: N N N.I…C.E. And a very respectable amount of true hip hop fans worldwide are more than familiar with DJ Too Tuff’s turntable wizardry on the Tuff Crew’s smash hit “My Part of Town”. A true Philly anthem, this track goes down in the history books as not only a classic hip-hop song, but also a very influential showcase of turntablist skill. It serves as a testament to the bubbling DJ scene that Philly is so famous for around the world. We caught up with DJ Too Tuff, right before he went to jail for violating his probation. He talks about the glory days of the Tuff crew and his plans for the future, which might not be the immediate future, but we remain hopeful.

Exclusive Interview with El Da Sensei

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

Interview w/El Da Sensei
By: Justin Rizzio

We caught up with El before the Boom Box Showcase to discuss the Artifacts,
his new album, and most importantly, Philly hip hop. See what “The Unusual” had
to say.

Some people refer to the early 90’s as the Golden Era of hip hop. Some call it
the True School. But no matter what you call it, don’t refer to El Da Sensei as
“Old School”. Yes, it’s been 12 years since the release of the classic “Between
A Rock And A Hard Place”. But after seeing the former Artifact (along with Reef
the Lost Cauze and The Last Emperor) at the debut for Philly’s new Boom Box
showcase, there is no doubt that El still fits in very nicely with todays
finest lyricists. I caught up with El before the show to discuss the Artifacts,
his new album, and most importantly, Philly hip hop. See what “The Unusual” had
to say.

Coming fresh off the long awaited Army Of The Pharaohs release, 7L and Esoteric are back, with a new sound and A New Dope.
