Interview w/Termanology

Let’s face it! It ain’t easy no more trying to come up in this rap game. But every now and then, one’s talent catches notice of a legend, they make a classic track, then BOOM! True talent all of a sudden is on the rise. In Boston’s risen star Termanology case, DJ Premier just happened to be that legend. And now has given Term the chance to make music with some of hip hop’s elite, to the likes of: Marley Marl, Nottz, M.O.P., Nas, Kanye West, Evidence, just to name a few. We got a chance to catch up with Termanology a few days after he was in Philly for a show at The Khyber. So check out what the man had to say….

215hiphop: Within the last year or so DJ Premier has really innovated himself, and has been in the spotlight allot recently. How does it feel to be apart of the new Premo legacy?

Termanology: Feels really good. We just finished another one last week that’s bout to drop soon.

215: In the song with Premier you mention how AIDS is affecting our community really hard. And your one of the few, if only hip hop artist who’s addressed this recently. So why do think its not being addressed by other artists, and why did you feel to address it?

Term: People don’t talk about it allot because there scared of it, or if they don’t know someone who got it, they don’t care. I just try to drop some jewels with it, while allot of other cats just like to brag or whatever, I like to mix it up by dropping jewels. At least 50% of the time I rap, while the other time I’m just talking shit. But overall I try to put some message in the rhyme.

215: You have a “Hood Politics” series out that’s going very strong. But how deep are you in U.S. Politics?

Term: Well I’m into it because my mom is really deep into it. She’s always finding out on what’s going on in the community and what’s going on in the corporate world, and she tries to teach me about it. Because where I’m from most people don’t give a sh*t about it. So I just look towards my mom as she teaches me, and I spread the knowledge to others. As well as reading up on things myself. But I try not to be too preachy with it, cause you loose people that way, so I try my best to put the Tylenol with the apple.

215: What certain issue have you read up on recently that you feel is important for everyone to know. But is not being addressed via TV, newspaper, ect.?

Term: Like Scooter Libby getting off and shit like that? Dude’s getting off in the court of law, and how if it was me I would be doing 10yrs off that case. So he got caught breaking a federal law with three felony’s on his record and was suppose to serve only 3yrs, and now is getting off? And then you have a kid who’s 17rs old who gets his dick sucked by a girl who’s three years younger than him, and he does 11yrs for breaking the law. So what the fuck message does this tell us? You can get 11yrs for getting your dick sucked, but you can break federal law and get away with it? So that just shows you how fucked up our system is.

215: A current trend in today’s rap world is for a break through artist is to first go to a major label to get attention. Then taking that fan base to an indie label. But you’ve chosen to do the opposite and start indie. So why are you taking this approach?

Term: Well the reason I’m going independent is because I could never find a good deal, I could never find someone to sign me and still allow me to be me. So instead of my just chasing a wack dream. I rather just do my own thing and get my own producers, then meet up with a distributor myself.

215: You have several mix-tapes currently on the street, but many mix-tape artists get pinned and stuck there, to just only release mix-tapes and never an album. Are you worried at all about this? And do you have any different approaches that other artists aren’t, or have never done?

Term: Yeah of course, cause the difference between me and those type of cats is that you call them mix-tape artists, cause that’s all you hear them on. I got real sh*t out by having vinyl out, I got albums coming, and real sh*t in the stores. I do allot of appearances on actual albums, remix’s, R&B sh*t, I take myself as a real artist. So the difference with me is that I got two separate actual albums coming out very soon, a mix-tape with all original music, and two vinyl’s coming out. So it’s real sh*t coming out that real artist do, so your not just going to hear me on some mix-tape sh*t or on other peoples mix-tape’s just spittin a hot 16.

215: Many have been putting you in conversations when talking about Saigon and Papoose, who both are on major labels. How does that feel being mentioned with such powerful/lyrical company?

Term: It feels great, both of those guys are great. There mad ill, I’m doing my thing, and hopefully all three of us will blow up. Cause right now there’s a huge lacking of dope MC’s.

215: The song “What How It Go Down” was recorded in the old D&D Studios where numerous classics were recorded. How was it spittin’ in that booth? Nervous at all?

Term: Yeah of course, It’s called Headquarters now though. Although yeah, it’s still the place. But it was crazy. The whole ore to it, and even just last week when recorded the new track. Your standing there in the same booth as Biggie, Jay, Nas and it just makes you get this feeling that you need to step it up, and just go in and do it.

215: You recently were just in Philly for a show at The Khyber, how was your stay in Philly. And you got any crazy stories? Because for some reason everyone always has a crazy story about visiting Philly.

Term: (laughs) Yeah, I got a couple crazy stories, I got thrown out of a club the first night I was there, just wildin out jumpin on speakers. But after that I calmed down. I had a good show. Shout out to Reef The Lost Cauze & Big Lou who were in the building. So yeah Philly was mad cool, you got allot of good looking females out there.

215: Any Philly artists MC’s, DJ’s, or producers you would like or already have worked with?

Term: The only cat I’ve worked with from Philly was Reef The Lost Cauze just recently when I was out there. I wanna work with Sigel though; I was just talking to ‘Lil Fame from M.O.P. who’s mad cool with Sigel. And I got a whole album with ‘Lil Fame coming out soon, so were gonna try and reach out and see if we can get that done. And also we reached out to Peedi’s people and are going to try and do something with him as well.

215: What’s in the near future for Termanology?

Term: Yeah, last week we dropped the Hood Politics V with Statik Selektah and Big Mike. It’s real crazy, got mad exclusives with all mad original joints. We got DJ Premier, Statik Selektah, Don Cannon, Buckwild, Moss, Canibus, Royce The 5’9, MOP, the list goes on. Then after that I got the solo album, the joint with ‘lil Fame. So we got three joints dropping all in a row till the end of the year. So just look out and thanx for all the support.
